Not just down to fitness and sprints though. Man United are lower than us on distance covered but it helps if you can keep the ball for more than three passes!!!

How did he survive all those years under the Pulis and Hughes training regimes?

I cannot imagine either of them having an easy going training regime.

You do realise that in the 80s British clubs with predominantly British teams won practically everything!?

Until Liverpool fucked everything up.

Re: Which of our players won't get with the programme?
No suprise really that the few foreign players around in the 70s and 80s were rated so highly..
They were professional and looked after themselves..always been a British lack of professionism ...no wonder we've won fuck all.

Alfs
Very good comparison that to the footballers.

Still amazes me how Arsenal in the Graham era did what they did..considering most of the first team were barely functioning alcoholics.
Maybe they were the best of the rest..dread to think what ours got upto.

Re: Which of our players won't get with the programme?
There are some sportsmen who 'want it', whatever the cost. I watched a Chris Hoy training session once. When he got off his training bike he was in such pain that he went into the foetal position and threw up. The reporter asked his coach how often that happened.

"Every day" was the reply.

With all of the money swashing around, many prem players nowadays can have an amazing lifestyle without ever getting out of third gear. They could be perhaps a 5% fitter/better player (which is massive at that standard) but instead seem happy to not put the effort in.

It's not just football. Many of us are guilty of the same, I know I am. But then I don't charge people fifty quid to watch me at work.

Re: Which of our players won't get with the programme?
None, I think they will all get on with it, they realise the honeymoon is over and the holiday camp has been shut down.

Getting fit is the only way they stand a chance. I suggest Moyes gets them to practice short passing of the ball to each other with movement, one touch and such like for hours and hours to help them keep possession.

Likewise they need to be drilled in defending as a team from attacking situations and set pieces over and over. This is the most important aspect to work on and get right immediately as confidence will return if we become difficult to breakdown and we will start winning games.

As others have said many are so unfit that injuries are unavoidable as a result and many may just be seeing the benefits of getting fit by the time his six months are up. We should see some of the youngsters get a game if we get injuries.

The one thing Kouyate doesn't struggle with is fitness.

He is going to love all this training without the ball.

Re: Which of our players won't get with the programme?
I don't like the emphasis on the physical side of training that's coming out here.

A bigger problem than lack of fitness, which I don't deny is A problem, is the number of times players make the wrong decision, drift out of position with no aim, etc.

I'd hate to think that only fitness was being adressed

Re: Which of our players won't get with the programme?
There are definitely players whose fitness has suffered due to poor training. It will take time to rectify this. Anyone expecting big improvement by the Watford game may be disappointed - especially since half the players are missing.
I expect the likes of Noble, Cresswell, Antonio in particular to get back towards their best.

Everyone says Nobles legs have gone and maybe they have but I'd bet that the decline since Bilic took over also has something to do with training as it has to do with age. It wasn't long ago he was covering for Nolans lack of mobility.

I think there will be a few unhappy 'stars'. I hope Moyes also isn't stupid enough that he thinks he can just bully this lot as they will then rebel and not perform to force him out. He isn't in a strong position himself especially if the fans are moaning.

Re: Which of our players won't get with the programme?
Good thread Stubbo ~

Carroll has been spongeing off the club for years using injuries as an excuse for not training & slipping out for a few pints. He seems to regard himself as the big star of the side, which must seriously piss off players who actually want to put an honest shift in

Arnautovic looks to be one of our many worst ever signings, lazy & overweight he's done nothing whatsover to even start to justify his obscene price tag

Personally, I would get these two straight out the door asap

For all his faults, i don't see how Sakho can be classed as lazy. He might have a change of heart now that Bilic has gone. I suspect there was an issue there

Antonio is overweight but tries hard. I wouldn't be playing again him until he's properly fit

Kouyate is a shadow of his former self. No idea if that's a fitness issue. What's wrong with his arm, does it need amputated?

Hernandes has definitely had issues with Moyes in the past, but let's hope they can put them to the side
